In this article, we will delve into the importance of Pure Tone Audiometry, a fundamental diagnostic test offered at our facility.

What is Pure Tone Audiometry Test?
Pure Tone Audiometry (PTA) is a primary and comprehensive hearing assessment that helps determine the softest sounds a person can hear at various frequencies. This test provides essential information about an individual’s hearing abilities and is a vital step in diagnosing hearing-related issues.
How Does Pure Tone Audiometry Work?
During a Pure Tone Audiometry test, the patient is seated in a soundproof booth or room and wears headphones or earphones. The audiologist or hearing specialist presents a series of pure tone sounds at different frequencies (measured in Hertz) and varying volume levels (measured in decibels). The patient is required to respond each time they hear a tone by pressing a button or raising their hand.

What Can Pure Tone Audiometry Reveal?
- Degree and Type of Hearing Loss
PTA results help determine the degree (mild, moderate, severe, profound) and type (conductive, sensorineural, mixed) of hearing loss. This information is essential for developing an appropriate treatment plan.
- Configuration of Hearing Loss
PTA also provides insights into the configuration of hearing loss, such as whether it affects specific frequencies more than others. This data aids in tailoring interventions like hearing aids.
- Threshold Shifts
It can help detect changes in hearing thresholds over time, making it useful for monitoring hearing health and adjusting treatment strategies.
